From breeding work at the Chicago Botanical Garden comes a new plant that has taken the plant industry by storm. ‘Twilight Prairie Blues’ is a cross of two native Baptisia species resulting in the creation of a big, beefy, heavily blooming plant that is, in a word, unforgettable. Like all Baptisia, the spring sees multiple thick stalks rapidly rising from the ground to form a considerable bush of deep, blue-green pea-like foliage. Spikes of flowers form at the top of each stem and open in late May to show off fantastically two-toned purple colored hooded flowers with bright yellow keels. Its bloom is long-lasting into early July to put an exclamation point on a plant that is amazingly easy to grow in full sun and well-drained soil.
