The extremely fragrant foliage is the source for the scent famous for its use in perfume and potpourri. Although the plant is more subtle than many herbs with its green leaves and redish underside of the leaves, its scented foliage will surprise and delight. The strong scent of Patchouli has been used for centuries in perfumes, and more recently in incense, insect repellants, and alternative medicines. Insects, especially the termite, do not like the patchouili plant and it is said to be a potent repellant. This selection is a fast grower with a bushy form that takes well to hard pruning and is drought-tolerant. Delicate whitish flowers bloom in the fall. Leaves can be harvested throughout the year and can be preserved by drying or by steam distillation where the essential oil is extracted.
