Leptodermis

Leptodermis

Shrub

It’s hard to believe that this plant that is so floriferous and so fragrant is so unknown and so underused that it doesn’t even have a decent common name! Even with all that it will rapidly become your favorite plant in the landscape. Its dense, rounded shape makes it easy to love and easy to use in small spots or in groups in sunny spots with moist, well-drained soil. In late May masses of flower buds open to 1″ long, narrow, tubular, deep purple flowers that nearly obscure the foliage and fill the air with their sweet scent. The main bloom season for Leptodermis lasts 4 to 6 weeks, but new growth on the plant will give rise to considerable flowers throughout the summer and into the early fall on a plant that won’t give up until cold weather makes it!
