As if a compact, re-blooming, Zone 5 hardy, big-leafed Hydrangea wasn’t enough, the breeders at Ball Ornamentals added double flower form to the huge, mophead bloom produced by this might mite, summer color bomb. ‘Expression’ begins to bud in May and will open up its massive flowers by mid-June revealing pink or blue flowers (blue in more acid soil conditions) with each floret making up the 5 to 6″ mophead showing off its double form. Even better, ‘Expression’ will bloom right until frost on stiff stems that hold the massive blooms upright without the flopping that can occur on other Hydrangea of this type. Plant ‘Expression’ in part to full sun, alone or in groups, for a stunning summer show and don’t worry about sandy soils or a little sea salt since this selection shrugs them off and keeps on blooming!
